Why People Never Tremble at the Altar Anymore: The Preaching of "Grace without Justice" and "Mercy without Repentance"
Why has the fear of God vanished? Explore how modern teachings of "Grace without Justice" and "Mercy without Repentance" have opened the door to church thefts and altar desecration.
The Empty Awe: When the Sanctuary Becomes a Playground
When we look at the broken roof of St. Mulumba in Owerri on April 29, 2026, where thieves tore through the ceiling to steal the Monstrance and the Blessed Sacrament, or the shocking reports of iron bells, offering basins, and window bars being stripped for scrap, we are seeing the physical manifestation of a spiritual void. As a historian looking at the long arc of the Church, I can tell you: we have entered a "Total Collapse of Awe."
In the medieval era, the concept of furtum sacra (holy theft) was so terrifying that few dared to even touch the vessels of the Lord. People lived in a world where the sacred was distinct from the profane. However, as your teacher and a minister of the Gospel, I must reveal a "hidden truth": That medieval fear was often a flawed theology built on superstition. Theft is theft. Whether it is a piece of iron from a window or a golden monstrance from an altar, it is a crime against society and an act of high treason against the Creator. The medieval church feared the object, but the modern church has forgotten to fear the Owner of the house. We have traded the "Fear of the Lord" for a comfortable, toothless theology.
The Root Cause: A Gospel of Convenience
The reason a young man feels bold enough to unveil an altar and use it for fornication—as I witnessed firsthand during my service in the Ohaji/Egbema Diocese back in 2024—is that he has been fed a diet of spiritual poison. We have designed a gospel that feels good but does not transform.
When the "bedsheets" of a sinful act are the very cloths used to cover the table of the Lord, we are seeing a generation that believes God is a "grandfather" who is too senile to notice sin, rather than a King who is too holy to tolerate it.
1. Grace With Justice
Modern preaching focuses almost exclusively on God’s favor while ignoring His holiness. But biblical Grace is not a "blank check" for lawlessness; it is the divine power to live righteously. True Grace works with Justice. If there is no Justice, there is no need for Awe. We must remember Hebrews 12:28-29—we must serve God with "reverence and godly fear," for our God is a consuming fire.
2. Mercy With Repentance
We have turned the "Throne of Grace" into a "Throne of Permission." But scriptural Mercy only meets those who Repent. This creates "consumers of religion" who view the church as a utility. They loot the church's iron because they believe a hollow "Lord have mercy" later will act as a magic eraser. Without a broken heart and a turned life, mercy remains out of reach.
The "Silent" Sacrilege: Leaders and the Loss of Glory
Revelational Question: Why does the congregation feel comfortable looting the church?
Answer: Because they have watched the "shepherds" loot the spiritual heritage of the church for years.
When ministers prioritize "rock star" lifestyles over the sanctity of the Word, or use the altar as a business desk for financial gain, they tell the world that the sanctuary is just a building. If the priest does not tremble while handling the tithes or the sacraments, the youth will not tremble while stripping the iron from the windows. The "Glory" departs quietly when worldliness and occultic foundations—seeking power from "strange altars" to grow numbers—replace the genuine fire of the Holy Spirit.
Beyond CCTV: The Strategy for the Soul
The modern church's first instinct after a theft is to mount CCTV cameras and hire armed guards. While these have their place, they are a band-aid on a gangrenous wound. You cannot secure a building if you have not secured the souls within it.
Revelational Strategy: Conversion over Surveillance
- The "Weight" of the Word: We must return to preaching that makes the conscience "heavy." A man who truly fears God does not need a camera to keep him from stealing.
- The Doctrine of Restitution: We must teach that stolen goods bring a curse into the home. We must make it clear that the iron sold for scrap is "fire" that will consume the thief's house.
- Sanctuary Vigilance: We must protect our holy places physically and spiritually, treating the house of God with more respect than our own homes.
A Tribute to Courageous Leadership
We congratulate and bless the ministry of Archbishop Lucius Ugorji. His call for a Week of Penance (May 1–8, 2026) is a prophetic act. He is calling us to stop the music and look at the holes in our hearts. He understands that before we fix the roof at St. Mulumba, we must fix the altar in our souls.
The Final Warning
If we do not restore the fear of God in our hearts, no amount of CCTV will save us. The theft at St. Mulumba is a "heavenly alarm," grabbing our attention to show us that the spiritual roof is already gone. Let us pray for the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord to possess the modern church once again.
