Tribute to A Christian Mother, Lolo Annastasia Esi Nnokwara (Nee Hukportie): The Legacy of What Modern Marriage and Motherhood Should Be Even in a Foreign Soil

Discover how Lolo Annastasia Nnokwara modeled the "Esther Spirit"—leaving comfort to build a godly legacy from the roots up in a foreign land.

The Mystery of the "Planted" Stranger

In our modern world, we often think "purpose" means staying where things are easy. But have you ever paused to consider the hidden mystery in the life of a woman who leaves her birthplace, her language, and her kindred to become a "Lolo" (Queen) in a distant land?

This teaching honors Lolo Annastasia Esi Nnokwara (Nee Hukportie), born March 6, 1957, in Avoeme, Aflao, Ghana. Her journey from the Ghanaian coast to Umuekpu Obinze, Owerri-West LGA, Imo State, Nigeria, is more than a biography—it is a blueprint. It reveals the answer to a vital question: how does a woman balance tireless industry with the unwavering virtues of a Christian mother to turn a "strange land" into a kingdom?

 FROM CHILDHOOD

The Journey of Faith: Choosing the Vision over the Finished Product

True virtue isn't found in seeking a "finished product." We must ask ourselves: do we have the eyes to see a kingdom in a man who is still in the workshop?

In the early 1980s in Lagos, her husband, Nze Ji (High Chief Damian Onyemuchechukwu Nnokwara), was a hardworking craftsman making cabinets, upholstery, and interior decors. While many women would have insisted on staying in the "township" of Lagos to enjoy city comforts, Annastasia saw something others missed. She saw a partner for a destiny ordained by God.

The Pregnant Woman with An Address 1985

Imagine the scene: a young, pregnant Ghanaian woman, carrying heavy loads and clutching a scrap of paper with an address. She traveled from the bustle of Lagos, across dilapidated roads in old, scrap-body buses, just to find the heart of Umuekpu Obinze. She spoke a unique "heavenly construction" of Pidgin and a mix of Igbo that only she could navigate.

The Revelational Truth: Is your destination more important to you than your dialect? Lolo’s determination to find her husband’s roots was her "coronation walk." Within just a few years, she mastered the Igbo language perfectly. Why? Because she didn't come as a guest; she came to stay. Are you waiting for a life to be "ready," or do you have the heart to plant seeds from scratch even when the road is rough?

Turning a Poor fearful Village Life into a Lucrative Business.

While so many today fear the "village life" and the hard work of beginning a life there, Lolo Annastasia left the comforts of Lagos to start at the root. When High Chief Damian joined her in the village, she didn't complain; she inspired. Together, they became a powerhouse of industry, working side-by-side in the fields and managing modest small businesses:

  • Farming Pineapple, Cassava,  Agwono and Yam.
  • Producing Palm Oil and processing Kernels.
  • Operating a restaurant in Afo-ukwu Obinze, and later at Abuja-Mgbirichi in Ohaji.
  • Establishing a thriving Piggery farm in Umuekpu Obinze.

They didn't just survive—they thrived. Her character led the community to honor them with the chieftaincy titles of Nze Ji and Lolo. She proved a vital point: can a woman’s influence really turn a forest into a kingdom? Her life shouts a resounding "Yes."

Second to None in Baking

Even while managing farms and small business ventures, Lolo was a master of the oven. In Umuekpu, the aroma of her buns, mince pies, puff-puff, and fish rolls was legendary.

She understood a truth many miss today: is not a mother’s kitchen her first place of service? She didn't just feed her family; she fed the community until they were full. When she baked, she wasn't just mixing flour; she was mixing Ghanaian resilience with Nigerian love.

A Merchant of Industries in Aba and Onitsha

When one door close, Lolo opened another. She also was a woman of trade. Her frequent business trips to the markets of Aba and Onitsha were missions of provision. She sought out:

  • Quality Utensils, Plates, and intricate Designs.
  • Coolers, Blending Machines, Basins, and Buckets.

She didn't resale these items for vanity or self wants. She did it to partner with her husband in raising their five children. She proved that a woman can bring "tools of ease" into her home through the sweat of her own brow.

A Pillar in the Parish: Serving with Purpose

Her virtue was anchored in St. Thomas Catholic Parish, Obinze. As a Christian Mother, she didn't just attend mass; she passed through every training and ritual to serve as a Christian Mother. She mentored and inspired younger women in the church. Does it not prove that you don't need to be a native to be a pillar in God’s house?

A Peaceful Transition: survived by

On November 11, 2025, at the age of 68, Lolo returned to the Father. She left behind a grand legacy, survived by her devoted husband, Nze Ji High Chief Damian Nnokwara, and five living testimonies of her hard work:

  • Prosper (CEO, Italian Bar and Lounge): Her only son, reflecting her entrepreneurial fire.
  • Queen, Cynthia, Joy, and Chinaza: Her four daughters, raised as pillars of virtue.
  • More than 20 Grandchildren: A generation that will carry her name and her strength into the future.

In a beautiful twist of providence, she had traveled back to her daughter’s house in Ghana for a vacation. It was there, in her own native land, that the light of life left her peacefully. Does it not show that God gives rest to the weary in the most peaceful ways?

Rest on, Nwanyi Ghana

As we bury your earthly remains today in your husband’s home, we cherish your labor. Like the biblical Esther who saved her people, and Abraham who left his country for a promised land, you fulfilled a God-chosen destiny. You chose the hard "road of the root" over the easy life of the township.

You will forever live in our hearts until the resurrection morning when the trump of God shall sound.

Rest on, Nwanyi Ghana, till we meet to part no more.
