A Memorial Biography of an Administrator, Entrepreneur, Community Leader, Philanthropist and Servant of God from Ụmụekpu Village, Obinze Ancient Kingdom, Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria.

A Miraculous Beginning
Young boy Achogbuonwa in his early days in the 50s

Every life has a beginning, and every beginning has a story. The story of Pastor Godspower Achọgbuonwa Nnọkwara began with a testimony of God's wonderful providence. He was born on 21st April, 1947, into the family of the late Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu Nnọkwara Onyị Ekwuheme Biringa Nwamgbọ of Ụmụekpu, Obinze Ancient kingdom, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, and Lọlọ Regina Nwọrji Hekwọalụwụnwa Osuagwụ of Ụmụnwanyị, Ụmụgụma, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.

His birth came after a period of sorrow and uncertainty within the family.

Following the death of Papa's first wife, Nne Ọdụenyi of Ọfọrọla village Owerri-west LGA, Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu was left with the responsibility of raising his young children alone. As a cook and steward on merchant ships, his work kept him away from home for long periods. Consequently, the day-to-day care of the children rested in the loving hands of Nkwọmma Ahalọnụ from Ụmụgụma village Owerri-west, the wife of his late uncle ”Nna Nwosu”, who looked after them with dedication and motherly affection.

Regina Nwoji’s Story of Hope

Around the same period, another painful story was unfolding.

Nne Regina Nwọrji had spent about twenty-five years in her first marriage at Irete without bearing a child. In those days, childlessness brought great emotional pain and social hardship. Eventually, the marriage ended in divorce. Carrying the burden of disappointment, she first returned to her father's home in Ụmụgụma and, from there, came to Ụmụekpu to live with her cousin sister Nkwọmma Ahalọnụ, hoping to ease her agony and find comfort.

Daddy's Mother Nne Regina nwoji Hekwoaluwunwa Osuagwu

It was during one of Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu's visits home to see his children that he met Miss Regina Nwọrji, who had been caring for the children as though they were her own biological children.

Impressed by her kindness, humility and motherly disposition, he expressed his desire to marry her.

Knowing her sister's history, Nkwọmma Ahalọnụ reminded him that she had been regarded as barren throughout her twenty-five-year marriage. But Andrew responded that he was not looking for another wife to bear more children. Rather, he desired a kind, caring and responsible woman who would lovingly care for his bereaved children as their own mother whenever he travelled on his sea voyages.

The Child of Divine Providence

Their marriage was eventually consummated Traditionally, and not long afterwards Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu departed on another voyage under his employer, popularly known as Doctor Brow, of Elder Dempster Shipping Lines, one of the dominant maritime companies in Nigeria during that era.

While he was away at sea, God remembered Nne Nwọrji.

The woman who had lived for many years without a child conceived. In due course, she gave birth safely to a healthy baby boy, who was named Achọgbuonwa, meaning, "the long-awaited child has come."

News of her pregnancy spreadi rapidly from one community to another. Some believed she was truly pregnant, while others insisted it was only fibroids. Overwhelmed by the unexpected news, her family summoned Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu, her husband, to explain what had happened to their once-barren daughter. The development generated excitement, curiosity and tension among relatives, friends and neighbours.

Daddy's late Uncle Kalu Nnokwara

The birth of this child filled the entire family with indescribable joy. The woman who had once been called barren had finally become a mother, just like the biblical Hannah. Her tears were turned into rejoicing, and her testimony became the talk of many communities. What many people had thought impossible became a living testimony of God's faithfulness.

The Only Surviving Son

Although Nze Andrew Ụzọegwu was blessed with many daughters, tragedy greatly reduced the number of his sons. His first son, Nicholas Ihejerewunwa later laid down his life while serving as a Biafran soldier during the Nigerian Civil War.

Achọgbuonwa survived the war but, in earlier years, already lost two younger brothers: Ihebom, who was his immediate younger brother and senior to Abigael, and the little Emmanuel, who was born after the birth of Gold.

As a result, Achọgbuonwa became the only surviving son in a family of 11 (7 girls and 4 boys). A position of great responsibility within the family.

Daddy as a visionary inscribed the word "Future Shall Tell In This World Of Our Own.

Growing Up

From childhood, he was raised in a loving extended family environment where discipline, respect, and hard work were highly cherished. He began his early education at Azudo Primary School, Obinze.

Before the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War, his elder sister, Lọlọ Ugoeze, wife of Duru Anthony Ekenma of Amachara Village, Ụmụchima, Ihiagwa, took him into her home and cared for him with genuine love and affection. From Ihiagwa, he later travelled with the family to Lagos, where he continued his education and broadened his life experience.

However, as political tension spread across Nigeria and the crisis that eventually led to the Nigerian Civil War intensified in 1966, he returned home to Obinze.

A Humble Beginning

With the end of the Nigerian Civil War, life gradually returned to normal. Like many young men of his generation, Achọgbuonwa was determined to rebuild his life through hard work, perseverance and education.

He did not begin his career from a position of comfort or privilege. Rather, he started from the very bottom. His first employment was as a company messenger, and later a cleaner, under Transalctic Shipping Line, Lagos.

Though the work was humble, he carried out every assignment with diligence, honesty and commitment. Those who worked with him soon discovered that beneath the uniform of a messenger was a disciplined young man whose intelligence, humility and willingness to learn distinguished him from many of his contemporaries.

A Friendship That Changed His Life

While working in Lagos, God used one of his childhood friends and brother, Nze Julius Ngerem (CEO  San Lorenzo Hotels), to open the door that would change the course of his life.

At the time, Nze Julius Ngerem was working with Tari Shipping Line. As he prepared to proceed on his annual leave, he pleaded with Achọgbuonwa to come and stand in for him temporarily until his return.

Without hesitation, Achọgbuonwa accepted the offer, seeing it as another opportunity to work diligently wherever God placed him.

What appeared to be an ordinary temporary assignment soon became the turning point of his professional career.

During the period he stood in for his friend, his commitment to duty attracted the attention of an expatriate foreign executive from Switzerland, Mrs. Susan Pomeranz.

She carefully observed his punctuality, intelligence, neatness, honesty and exceptional dedication to his responsibilities. Within a short time, she became convinced that he possessed far greater abilities than the position he occupied.

Recognising his potential, Mrs. Susan Pomeranz recommended that he be retainers permanently within the company.

That single decision marked the beginning of a remarkable transformation in his professional life.

Combining Work with Education

Achọgbuonwa never allowed employment to interrupt his educational aspirations.

Believing that education was the key to greater opportunities, he enrolled at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, in 1974, where he took courses in Shipping Management.

Balancing academic studies with the demands of a full-time career required discipline and sacrifice. Nevertheless, he remained focused, successfully combining work with higher education.

Daddy received his friends and brothers in 1977. Jolly papa extreme left, Ikechukwu at centre and Kingsley Ehirim at extreme right, and daddy squatting at the front.

His commitment to self-improvement earned him the admiration of both historical employers and colleagues.

As his knowledge and experience increased, so did his responsibilities.

Haven served as a messenger, cleaner, and then an office typist, he was promoted to the position of Company's Secretary. His exceptional administrative ability, organisational skills and sound judgment soon earned him further promotion to Company's Manager.

The management of the company continued to invest in his development by sponsoring him to numerous professional courses and specialised trainings in shipping administration, maritime operations and business management.

Each new responsibility further prepared him for greater leadership.

In 1977, he rose to become one of the company's principal managers and was eventually appointed to Coordinate, and  supervise shipping activities beyond normal office appointments.

Years of Professional Excellence

From Shipping to Agriculture: The Birth of Gobi Farm Enterprises

After many years of distinguished service in the maritime industry, Pastor Godspower Achọgbuonwa made one of the most important decisions of his life. Owing to an internal crisis within the shipping company that posed a serious threat to his safety, he resigned from his position and embraced a completely new path.

Rather than allowing this unexpected change to discourage him, he saw it as another opportunity to begin afresh. With characteristic determination, he got another admission to study business Administration with Alvan Ikokwu College Of Education Owerri and later turned his attention to agriculture—a sector that would later become the foundation of one of Obinze's most remarkable indigenous enterprises.

Training for a New Vision

In 1980, he enrolled in agricultural training programmes organised under ADC, where he received intensive training in poultry farming, piggery and modern agricultural practices.

His wife, Mrs. Juliana Nnokwara, shared his vision and accompanied him throughout this period of learning. Together, they acquired practical knowledge and skills that would later become invaluable in establishing their own agricultural enterprise.

Their training convinced them that agriculture could become more than a means of livelihood; it could also create employment, improve food production and uplift the economic wellbeing of their community.

The Sacrifice of a Virtuous Wife

Upon their return to Obinze, they began with very little.

Determined to support her husband and ensure the success of their new venture, Mrs. Juliana Nnokwara refused to be discouraged by the family's modest circumstances. She observed that large quantities of ripe palm fruits were left to waste in nearby bushes because many people lacked the means to harvest and process them.

The Beginning of Gobi Farm Enterprises

During one of her trading trips to Orọdọ Market, while searching for people who could process her harvested palm fruits, Mrs. Juliana Nnokwara came across a palm fruit digester and a palm oil press.

She immediately recognised the opportunity before her.

That modest investment marked the birth of what would later become Gobi Farm Enterprises, one of the earliest indigenous agro-industrial establishments in Obinze.

A Vision That Grew Beyond Expectations

What began as a small family business expanded rapidly through hard work, careful management and God's blessings.

By 1985, the enterprise had expanded so significantly that production operated both day and night. Different departments were established to meet increasing demand.

These included:

Palm oil production.

Palm kernel processing.

Palm kernel oil production.

Palm kernel cake production.

Poultry farming.

Piggery.

Snail farming.

Egg incubation and hatchery services.

The business soon became one of the best-known indigenous agricultural establishments in the area.

As the enterprise expanded, the demand for palm fruits increased considerably.

With technical support from the Imo State Ministry of Agriculture under Federal Government agricultural programmes, the company established extensive palm plantations to ensure a steady supply of raw materials.

GOBI FARMS pigry farming began locally with indeginous local breads of pigs in 1984.

In addition to harvesting from its own plantations, the company also sourced palm fruits from Adapalm and Risonpalm, thereby sustaining continuous production throughout the year.

Creating Employment and Empowering the Community
Daddy in his office as the Managing Director of Gobi Farms Enterprises, Obinze, Owerri, in 1986. During his tenure, he was renowned as one of the fastest typists and shorthand writers Obinze had ever known.

One of the greatest achievements of Godspower Achọgbuonwa was not merely building a successful business but empowering others to succeed.

Recognising that many young men possessed the strength to harvest palm fruits but lacked the necessary tools and inspiration, he summoned them, inspired them , funded them and also provided them with climbing ropes (Akpị) and machetes free of charge.

GOBI FARMS inspired Local palm cutting, as young men ventured into wild forests in search of palm fruits for livelihood.

Many families who previously had no stable source of income were able to earn a living through palm fruit harvesting and supply.

Others found employment within the factory itself, many relied on creating and selling brooms from his vast aecars of palm estate, while many traders benefited from buying and selling products processed by the company.

Through these efforts, numerous households in Obinze and beyond experienced improved livelihoods.

A Lasting Economic Legacy

before the year 2000, Gobi Farm Enterprises had become much more than a family business.

It had evolved into a centre of employment, agricultural innovation and community development.

Directly and indirectly, countless individuals and families benefited from the vision, sacrifice and industry of Godspower Achọgbuonwa and Ochiri-ozuo Juliana Nnokwara.

The enterprise stood as living proof that determination, hard work and wise stewardship can transform humble beginnings into lasting blessings for an entire community.

The family life of Godspower Achọgbuonwa Nnọkwara reflected both the customs of his time and the unique circumstances through which his family passed.

During the Nigerian Civil War, and in keeping with the tradition that existed in many Igbo communities at the time, a young woman from Ọlụ was married on behalf of the family. This decision was taken because his elder brother, Nicholas Ihejerewunwa Ụzọegwu, had already joined the Biafran Army and was no longer available to fulfil the family expectation of marriage.

However, with the end of the war came a series of unforeseen events. Following the death of Nicholas during the war and the difficulties associated with transportation and communication in the immediate post-war years, the marriage could not continue as originally intended.

Another Beginning

As life gradually returned to normal, another marriage was arranged for him with Flora Ugbaku Daniel of Ihiagwa.

Unfortunately, that union was short-lived. Before the marriage could become firmly established, her widowed mother withdrew her from the relationship and later gave her in marriage to a wealthier man from Eziobodo.

Although this development brought disappointment, Achọgbuonwa accepted it with maturity and continued with his life, believing that God would direct his path.

Finding His Soulmate

While serving faithfully as a young member of Saint Michael's Anglican Church, Obinze, God was preparing the woman who would become his lifelong companion.

Their friendship gradually blossomed into a lifelong relationship, and in 1973 they goyt married.

Their marriage was founded on mutual love, understanding, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to family values. Immediately after their wedding, circumstances required yet another sacrifice.

Because Mrs. Juliana Eboh was working with A. J. Leventis then in Lagos, her family requested that she remain with them so that her income could help support the training and welfare of her younger siblings.

Understanding the importance of family responsibility, Achọgbuonwa willingly accepted this arrangement.

In 1975, after fulfilling that obligation, she finally joined her husband, and together they began to build their own home.

A Loving Father

Despite his many responsibilities in business, community leadership and later in Christian ministry, Achọgbuonwa Ụzọegwu Nnọkwara remained deeply committed to his family.

He believed that the true wealth of a man was not measured merely by material possessions but by the lives he nurtured and the legacy he left behind.

His home was always open to relatives, friends and visitors, many of whom found acceptance, guidance and support under his roof.

Community Service, Philanthropy and Social Life

Throughout his lifetime, he devoted himself to lifting others, creating opportunities for the less privileged and extending a helping hand to those in need. His generosity was never driven by the desire for recognition but by a sincere conviction that every blessing received from God should become a blessing to others.

Helping Others to Rise

Having experienced hardship in his early years, he understood the struggles faced by many young people seeking a better future.

During his years in Lagos, he became a source of encouragement to numerous relatives, friends and acquaintances. Many people secured employment in the shipping industry through his recommendations and personal efforts. He believed that opening a door for another person was one of the greatest investments anyone could make.

He was equally committed to supporting those who desired to establish themselves in business or acquire meaningful skills. Whenever he had the opportunity, he freely shared his knowledge, experience and professional network for the benefit of others.

Supporting Families

His generosity extended beyond employment opportunities.

Over the years, he either sponsored or contributed substantially towards the marriages of many young men and women, including relatives, friends, neighbours and former employees. He regarded marriage as the foundation of a stable society and considered it a privilege to assist young couples in establishing their homes.

Many families who today enjoy peaceful homes remember with gratitude the support they received from him during the early years of their marriages.

A Friend of the Community

For them, charity was not an occasional event but a practical expression of Christian love.

Many beneficiaries still remember the kindness they experienced through this ministry of compassion.

Leadership in the Community

Beyond his personal acts of generosity, he accepted numerous leadership responsibilities within the community.

In the early 1990s, Nze Godspower Achọgbuonwa Ụzọegwu Nnọkwara Onyị became one of the founding members and pioneers of the prestigious Nze Club Obinze.

His Christian Journey and Pastoral Ministry

Growing Up in the Anglican Faith

The spiritual foundation of Pastor Godspower Achọgbuonwa Hejikomọnu Nnọkwara was laid from childhood.

Following the instruction of his father, he was entrusted to the care of his senior cousin, Sir Samuel Ọhashiamnwe Nwosu, under whose mentorship he was nurtured in the Anglican faith.

Daddy was the first cross bearer in saint Michael's Anglican church Obinze.

As a young boy, he became the first Cross Bearer of Saint Michael's Anglican Church, Obinze, where he faithfully served with reverence and dedication. His commitment to the work of God became evident from an early age, and he grew steadily in the life and activities of the Church.

A Dedicated Church Worker

As he grew older, he became an active member of the Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) and also served in the church choir.

During the 1971–1972 choir session, he was among the young choristers whose outstanding performance brought honour to Saint Michael's Anglican Church, Obinze, when the choir emerged victorious in the diocesan singing competition.

To him, church activities were never mere programmes. They were opportunities to worship God, serve His people and strengthen the fellowship of believers.

Pastor GODSPOWER and his friend and brother Victor Akandu Nwosu.

Passion for Evangelism

His youthful zeal extended beyond the walls of his home church.

Together with other committed Anglican youths, he participated actively in mission outreaches and church planting efforts that led to the establishment and growth of Anglican congregations in Obogwe, Ụmụnwanwa, Ụmụnwaku, Asa, Ụmụkene and Ụmụagwọ.

These missionary journeys demanded sacrifice, endurance and commitment, yet he willingly gave his time and strength for the advancement of the Gospel.

Even after relocating to Lagos, his love for his home church remained unwavering.

Together with other youths from Saint Michael's Anglican Church living in Lagos, they formed a fellowship through which they regularly contributed financial support towards the growth and development of St Michael’s church Obinze.

Distance never diminished his commitment to the work of God.

A Call Awaiting Its Time

Even during his youthful years in the Anglican Church, many people observed his love for the things of God and believed that he possessed the qualities of a minister.

Deep within his heart, he also sensed that God had a special purpose for his life.

“Daddy taking the matriculation oath, pledging to abide by the laws, rules, and regulations of Kings International Theological Seminary, Owerri Campus, in 2012.”

However, he believed that every calling has its appointed time.

While faithfully serving in the Church, he devoted many years to building his family, developing his career, establishing businesses and serving his community, trusting that God would reveal the next stage of his life's journey in His own time.

Answering the Call

In 2012, that long-awaited moment arrived.

With a renewed understanding of God's purpose for his life, Pastor Godspower Achọgbuonwa made a wholehearted commitment to Jesus Christ and answered the call into active Christian ministry.

He became a member of Life Living God Assured Church, Avu Junction, Owerri–Port Harcourt Road, where he dedicated himself completely to the service of God.

His maturity, humility and unwavering commitment soon earned the confidence of the leadership of the Church, and he was appointed to serve as a Resident Pastor.

In 2013, he enrolled at Kings International Theological Seminary, Owerri, now known as Archbishop P. C. Chukwuma Kings International Theological Seminary, Owerri.

His years at the Seminary strengthened his understanding of Christian doctrine, pastoral leadership, biblical interpretation and apologetics.

He encouraged believers to remain steadfast in faith, to forgive one another and to trust God in every circumstance.

His preaching was simple, practical and firmly rooted in the Word of God.

He counselled families with patience.

He encouraged the discouraged.

He strengthened the weak.

He prayed with the afflicted.

He rejoiced with those who rejoiced and comforted those who mourned.

Throughout his ministry, he remained a church builder, a supporter of missionary work, a generous giver, an inspirational preacher, a dependable counsellor and, above all, a devoted servant of God.

APPRECIATION

We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to all friends, relatives, groups, and well-wishers who stood by us during his period of illness and his transition to glory.

We deeply appreciate everyone who, in one way or another, brought support—through prayers, visits, gifts, and encouragement—during his waiting period. We especially acknowledge the kindness of Dr Sir Silas Nwamadi of Goodwill Hospital Obinze who selflessly and routinely drove down to daddy's home for medical checks. Kudos to daddy's brothers Nzeji High Chief Damian Nnokwara, Ezinna Chukwuwuikem Nwosu and LR. Sir Samuel Ọhashiamnwe Nwosu They're always there whenever daddy calls. Ezinna Innocent Ogbonna, and  Hon. Julius Ngerem would always visit with their substances. May God also  bless Umuekpu Village Meeting, NZE Club Obinze, Life Living God Assured Church, and many others too numerous to mention. Your love contributions and support have been truly overwhelming.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to all who sent condolence messages, paid tribute, contributed financially, and took time to be physically present to honour and pay their last respects to our beloved father.

May God continue to keep and prosper you all.

Though our hearts are heavy with his absence, we remain grateful to God for the gift of his life. He has fought the good fight, finished his course and will forever continue living in our hearts.

Good night to the best father of all time.

Rest peacefully in the bosom of the Lord until we meet again.
