"Holy Ghost fire! Fall and destroy my enemies!"
But the real question is: Is this what Jesus taught His disciples?
Let’s go back to the Scriptures.
The Story of Jesus, James, and John
In Luke 9:51-56, Jesus and His disciples were passing through a Samaritan village. Some people rejected them and refused to welcome them.
Then James and John, full of zeal, said to Jesus:
“Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?” — Luke 9:54 (NKJV)
Why did they say this?
Because in the Old Testament, Prophet Elijah called down fire from heaven to destroy enemies (2 Kings 1:10-12). James and John knew their Scriptures and thought this was the right response.
But What Did Jesus Do?
“But He turned and rebuked them, and said, ‘You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.’ And they went to another village.” — Luke 9:55-56
Jesus rebuked His own disciples.
Why? Because they were quoting Old Testament actions but missing the new covenant spirit of grace and love.
The Shift from Judaism to Christianity
In the Old Testament (Judaism):
God allowed Israel to fight physical battles.
Fire fell to judge sin and destroy the wicked.
In Christianity (New Testament):
Jesus brought grace, forgiveness, and love.
Jesus never commanded us to call fire on people.
He called us to save, forgive, love, and pray for our enemies.
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” — Matthew 5:44
What True Christianity Teaches
✔️ We pray for our enemies, not call down fire on them.
✔️ We bless those who curse us, not curse back.
✔️ We overcome evil with good, not evil with evil.
✔️ We represent Christ, who came to save, not to destroy.
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21
The Misuse of “Holy Ghost Fire”
The Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost) is not an instrument of vengeance, but a spirit of:
Comfort (John 14:26),
Conviction (John 16:8),
Power for witness (Acts 1:8),
Guidance into truth (John 16:13).
Calling “Holy Ghost Fire” to destroy human beings is a misrepresentation of the purpose of the Holy Spirit.
It is not Christlike. It is against the teachings of Jesus.
A Call to True Discipleship
Jesus didn’t say, “Curse your enemies.”
He said, “Love them.”
“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” — John 13:35
So, dear believer,
✔️ Stop using Old Testament warfare in the wrong context.
✔️ Stop fighting spiritual battles with carnal anger.
✔️ Let go of vengeance — it belongs to God alone (Romans 12:19).
✔️ Embrace the Spirit of Christ — love, mercy, forgiveness.
If this has spoken to you, share it with someone who needs to understand the true Spirit of Christ.
